The Lives of Vanderbilt Hall

NYU School of Law, the oldest law school in the city of New York, is home to some of the youngest dreamers of the world.

Through the gate and walls of NYU Law’s main academic building, Vanderbilt Hall, where two or three bicycles are always chained, people get to peek into the lives of its law students.

NYU Law is known for its rigid academic standards, which is represented by a few impressive or even intimidating numbers: 1st in Tax Law, 97.18% Bar Pass rate, and 93.7% of the Class of 2013 graduates obtaining full-time employment 9 months after graduation. Such standards, of course, mean burdens on students.

Wu Qiao Song, an LLM freshman, said frankly, “I only have three days of classes each week, yet the rest of my days are occupied with homework.” This feeling was shared by experienced Australian attorney, Christine Tran: “I am used to my working hours, which is 9am to 6pm. I am trying to apply that to my NYU Law School life; it barely works.”

NYU Law is also an attraction for its colorful student life. Mr. Wu said, “This place just has so many opportunities. We have international NGOs over for internship recruitments, prestigious law firms coming over to recruit students.” Christine Tran, on the other hand, was impressed by its nice people from diverse backgrounds, saying, “You just meet so many nice people here; not just fellow students from different cultural backgrounds, which is indeed exciting, but also you get to meet some of the experts in the field of law. We have some amazing professors and speakers here.”

From the eyes of us outsiders, law students might just be these busy, fast-paced people in suits. However, the truth is that their academic life is admirably tough yet filled with opportunities to network and meet new people.
